What Cofferdam Do I Need for River Works? Sizing an Aqua-Barrier by Water Depth and Flow

The short answer

For temporary in-stream works — culvert repairs, bridge and dam maintenance, pipeline crossings, concrete pours, boat ramps and foreshore restoration — the cofferdam most buyers actually need is a water-inflated cofferdam (Aqua-Barrier), not a driven-sheet-pile or earth-fill structure. It sits standalone on the bed, needs no piling or bed penetration, and fills with the site's own water. Which cofferdam you need comes down to three questions: how deep is the water, how fast is it flowing, and what is the bed like? Get those right and the barrier selection follows.

Match the barrier height to your water depth

The single most important number is water depth against freeboard — the dry margin of barrier standing above the held-back water level.

An Aqua-Barrier requires a minimum 25% freeboard. In plain terms, the water you're holding back must be no more than about 75% of the barrier's height. That protects against overtopping from ripples, wake and minor surges.

The two standard heights Apex Envirocare stocks

  • 2.4 m barrier — holds back up to ~1.8 m of water (and sediment combined) at the 25% freeboard limit. This is the tallest standard unit and the workhorse for deeper creek and river sections.
  • 1.8 m barrier — suited to shallower drains, canals and low-flow creeks where the water sits well under ~1.35 m.

Both sizes are held in stock, so mobilisation is fast. Custom heights are available for unusual cases, but the 1.8 m and 2.4 m units cover the large majority of river-works jobs.

Rule of thumb: measure the deepest water in your work isolation line, add your combined sediment depth, then pick a barrier at least ~33% taller than that figure.

If your water is deeper than ~1.8 m, you're beyond the tallest standard unit — that job needs a taller/custom barrier or engineering, and it's worth talking to Apex Envirocare before you commit to a method.

Check the flow velocity before you commit

Depth tells you the height; current tells you whether an off-the-shelf setup will work at all.

At or above roughly 0.9 m/s (3 ft/s), a water-inflated cofferdam needs extra freeboard and engineering sign-off — moving water pushes on the barrier and can drive water up the upstream face. Slow, ponded or gently flowing watercourses are ideal; fast, flashy channels need assessment first.

For genuinely flowing streams, the usual approach is to isolate only part of the channel, or to combine the Aqua-Barrier with a diversion pipe or pump so the flow bypasses your dry work zone. Apex Envirocare designs the isolation layout around your flow, not just your footprint.

Read the bed and banks

Because an Aqua-Barrier sits standalone on the bed, the ground it sits on matters:

  • Firm, reasonably even bed — ideal. The barrier's own weight of water holds it in place, no anchoring required.
  • Slick, weak or unstable soils; steep or excessive slope; very uneven ground; or wave/dynamic loads — these need a site assessment and possibly external support. Don't assume a bare barrier will hold on soft silt or a steep batter.

The upside of a no-penetration cofferdam is significant on sensitive foreshores and sediment-retention jobs: there's no piling vibration, no bed disturbance from driven sheets, and no anchorage scarring. Why a water-inflated cofferdam beats the alternatives for temporary works

Versus sheet piling

Sheet piles need plant, vibration and bed penetration, and they're slow to install and pull. An Aqua-Barrier deploys and demobilises fast, leaves no driven-in remnants, and is reusable many times. For a two-week culvert repair, piling is usually overkill.

Versus sandbags or earth bunds

Sandbag and earth-fill bunds are labour-heavy, leak, and generate spoil you then have to remove and dispose of. A water-inflated barrier fills from any water source, including saltwater, drains down at the end, and packs away.

Build length, shape and height with overlaps

Single units rarely fit a channel exactly. Aqua-Barrier units overlap at any angle, so you can build a run of the length you need, turn corners around a structure, and box in a work area on multiple sides. The PVC is infield-repairable, so minor damage on site doesn't take the barrier out of service.

What it is NOT for

Be honest about the limits — pushing past them is where cofferdams fail:

  • Water deeper than ~1.8 m against the tallest standard unit — needs custom height or engineering.
  • Flow at/above ~0.9 m/s — needs extra freeboard and sign-off.
  • Unstable beds, steep slopes, very uneven ground, or wave/dynamic loading — need assessment and possibly external support.
  • Permanent water retention — an Aqua-Barrier is a temporary cofferdam, not a substitute for an engineered permanent dam.
