Geotextile Tube Dewatering: How to Turn Dredge Slurry & Pond Sludge into Cartable Solids

The short answer

If your dredge or desludging pump is producing a slurry you can’t landfill and can’t truck, geotextile tube dewatering is the back-end that fixes it. Why slurry is the problem — and what dewatering actually changes

A dredge or desludging pump moves sediment as a slurry: mostly water, with the solids you actually want to get rid of suspended in it. That’s efficient for pumping, but useless for disposal. You can’t tip a liquid into a skip, you can’t cart it economically (you’re paying to truck water), and it won’t meet the acceptance conditions for landfill or reuse.

Dewatering separates the two streams. The solids and fines stay behind inside the tube; the water leaves as filtrate. What you’re left with is a dramatically reduced volume and weight of retained cake that can be excavated and carted, plus clarified water you can put straight back where it came from. On a pond desludge that means you keep the pond’s own water balance intact instead of trucking it away.

How GeoPro™ tube dewatering works, step by step

1. Condition the slurry — this is the make-or-break step

Geotextile tubes are a filtration system, not a magic bag. Fine or organic sludge will not dewater on its own — the fines pass straight through the fabric and the filtrate runs dirty. The fix is conditioning: dosing the slurry with a polymer/flocculant matched to the material so the fine particles bind into larger flocs that the fabric can capture. Apex Envirocare matches the conditioning chemistry to the sediment — the polymer for a clay-heavy dam is not the polymer for a paper-mill or food-processing sludge. Get this right and the filtrate runs clear; get it wrong and you’re pumping your solids out the other end.

2. Pump into the tube

The conditioned slurry is pumped into the tube through one or more inlet ports (GeoPro desludging tubes run 1–3 port inlets depending on size). The tube fills, pressure builds internally, and water is forced out through the pores of the woven fabric while the flocculated solids are held inside.

3. Fill, drain, repeat

This is not a one-pass mechanical squeeze — it’s a fill-and-drain cycle. The tube fills, drains down as water passes through, and is topped up again. Each cycle adds more solids and consolidates what’s already there. Over successive cycles the retained material densifies from a soup into a paste and finally into a cartable cake. Anyone expecting an instant result is thinking of a centrifuge; a geotextile tube trades speed for simplicity, low energy and low odour.

4. Return the water, cart the solids

The clear filtrate is captured and returned to the pond, sump or discharge point. When the tube is full and consolidated, it’s opened and the cake excavated for carting. Dewatering reduces the volume and weight you have to move — but it isn’t a disposal method on its own. The retained cake still has to be carted away or landfilled, and the disposal pathway has to meet its own acceptance conditions. Matching the format to your site

A big advantage of the GeoPro™ range is that the container is sized and shaped to the job rather than the job being forced to fit one bag:

  • GeoPro desludging tubes — 7 m³ to 400 m³ (3.5–30 m long): the workhorse for pond, dam and wastewater-treatment-plant desludging where there’s room to lay a tube out.
  • Skip Bin Tubes: drop into a standard skip or roll-on/off hook bin — purpose-built for tight or built-up sites where there’s no open laydown. Fill the tube in the bin, then hook the whole bin off for carting.
  • Cubic Bags on frames or pallets: for small or scalable jobs — forked off when full, so you can run several in parallel and add capacity as needed.
  • Custom tubes to multiple-metre diameter for large-volume campaigns.

Where laydown is genuinely limited, tubes can be stacked in a pyramid to save footprint — you get more dewatering capacity out of the same slab. The fabric is UV-stabilised and chemical-resistant woven PP, so tubes tolerate sitting out through a long dewatering campaign.

It’s honest work to say where it’s the wrong tool:

  • You need somewhere for the tube to sit — a containment area with fall so the filtrate can be captured and returned. No laydown, no dewatering.
